Intervertebral Disc Prolapse

Causes and Treatment Approach

Understanding Intervertebral Disc Prolapse

Intervertebral disc prolapse, commonly known as a herniated or slipped disc, occurs due to the dehydration of the disc. As the water content in the disc decreases, it loses its flexibility and cushioning ability, leading to pain, stiffness, muscle wasting and discomfort.

Why Massage and Kizhi Are Not Ideal for Disc Bulge

Many people believe that traditional therapies like massage and kizhi (herbal bolus therapy) can help, but these treatments are not suitable for disc bulge. Excess pressure can further aggravate the condition, potentially worsening inflammation and pain.In some cases, there will be oedema which aggravates on oil treatments. So oil based kizhi and massage is not suitable for all IVDP cases.

Causes of Intervertebral Disc Prolapse

  • Dehydration of the Disc - Reduction in water content weakens the disc, making it prone to bulging or rupture.
  • Acidity - Increased acidity in the body can affect metabolic balance, leading to inflammation and tissue degeneration.
  • Constipation & Other Metabolic Errors - Poor digestion and metabolic imbalances contribute to reduced nutrient absorption, weakening spinal structures.

Three-Step Holistic Treatment Approach

Oil Pouring Therapy
  • As hot oil can easily penetrate to all body tissues, it helps in nourishing and rehydrating the disc.
  • Relieves inflammation and improves flexibility.
  • Enhances circulation for faster healing.
Muscle Correction Therapy
  • Focuses on aligning and strengthening muscles to support the spine. As this treatment do not involve vigorous massage which gives strain to the spine, on the other hand it.
  • Reduces stress on the affected disc, preventing further damage.
  • Improves posture and mobility.
Dietary Habit Correction
  • Plays a crucial role in managing acidity and metabolic errors.
  • Helps restore hydration levels in the disc.
  • Dietary Corrections for Acidity.
  • Include alkaline-rich foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and coconut water.
  • Avoid acidic foods such as processed foods, excessive caffeine, and fried items, citrus fruits.
  • Stay hydrated with herbal infusions and warm water throughout the day.
  • Incorporate fiber-rich foods to prevent constipation and improve gut health.

A holistic approach, including therapeutic treatments, muscle strengthening, and dietary corrections, can help manage and heal intervertebral disc prolapse effectively.
